‘Biggest gang in town’: Manchester cop-turned-author wows Tory crowd with police corruption-busting show

By Sarah Yates

A former Manchester policeman-turned-author wowed Conservatives at their annual conference this week with a corruption-busting show entitled a ‘relatively honest police force’.

Stephen Hayes, 67, did a walking tour of venues close to the Conservative Party Conference base at Manchester Central and had Tories young and old chortling at his YouTube clip featuring Prime Minister David Cameron.

Ex-detective Stephen, who released his first book The Biggest Gang In Britain to highlight police corruption based on his 13 years with GMP, was pleased with the response he received.

He said: “The Tories clearly thought it was hilarious – apparently I missed UKIP leader Nigel Farage by 24 hours when I did an impromptu talk in the Sir Ralph Abercrombie beside the city centre’s Bootle Street Police Station – where I was based in my uniform days.

“It was a very light-hearted walking tour that took in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival in Albert Square, The Albert Square Chop House and the Circus Tavern – where George Best used to drink.

“But I wanted to make a serious point as well that I am very concerned at the way our nation’s police forces are deteriorating.”

Despite the Tory bigwigs descending on the city for their annual conference, Stephen was left disappointed having not bumped into any of the top brass on his dream audience list.

Stephen said: “I was really hoping to bump into the Home Secretary Theresa May on my walking tour or even Andrew Mitchell MP of Plebgate fame.

“It would have been very funny if David Cameron had called into any of the venues when I was showing my YouTube clip – he’s the real star of that show.”

Stephen, who was accompanied on his walking tour by his publisher, revealed that the second book in his Biggest Gang trilogy Fifty Shades of Black ‘N’ Blue will be out in time for Christmas and like his first aims to shine the spotlight on a culture of corruption in the force.
