With a trophy cabinet outweighing the Natural History Museum and an fiery obsession to expand it, Sir Alex Ferguson is being honoured with a statue outside of Manchester United’s home ground later this month.

It was 26 years ago today that the Scotsman crossed the border and took the Old Trafford hotseat – and in Liverpool’s era of record-breaking and paving the way to success, Fergie’s peerless career was unforeseen.

But 37 team trophies, 67 individual honours and three visits to the Queen later, the club’s greatest-ever manager was handed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand at Old Trafford and will stand cast in iron outside the entrance.

A club spokesman said: "It will be placed in a prominent position near the entrance to the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand – formerly the North Stand which was renamed in his honour last year.

"The club will also be unveiling new artwork and installations in the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand concourses which will illustrate the manager's achievements throughout his United career."

Phillip Jackson has created the piece, which will be unveiled in the presence of prominent figures from Ferguson’s tenure.
