'If Rooney moves, where does he go?' Michael Owen believes Manchester United man has just six suitors

Following Wayne Rooney’s shock omission from Manchester United’s starting line-up against Real Madrid on Tuesday, rumours are abound that he could be ready to leave the Reds.

However, former Manchester United and Real Madrid player Michael Owen believes Rooney could find himself lacking options if he decides to leave in the summer.

"Sometimes when you're at the level he is at you don't have many options," Owen told TalkSPORT.

"If you are a mediocre player you have 20 teams in England and abroad that you can move to.

"If Wayne Rooney moves, where does he go to? Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Chelsea and PSG – there's only half a dozen teams.”

Rooney’s snub for the colossal tie provoked debate and even outrage, and now the question marks over his future loom heavy.

His wife Coleen even seemed to question Sir Alex Ferguson’s selection policy upon hearing that Rooney would be left out of the starting line-up.

She took to Twitter, saying: “Can't believe @WayneRooney isn't starting tonight!!!”

Then appeared to backtrack on her remarks by sending a later tweet which said: “Don't know much about football, so not trying to say anything!!”

However, United’s performance on Tuesday until Nani’s harsh red card just before the hour led many to believe that Sir Alex was right in his decision to leave Rooney out.

Owen believes Manchester United’s 4th highest all-time goal-scorer still has a future at Old Trafford.

He added: “It's just speculation though.

“He's been dropped for one game and I'm sure he will bounce back.”
