Double swoop boosts Wigan Athletic before FA Cup destiny rematch against Manchester City

Wigan Athletic boss Uwe Rosler was named as the Championship manager of the month for February after his team won four of their five matches and pushed themselves into play-off contention.

The award comes hot on the heels of Latics picking up the LMA’s Performance of the Week award for the last weekend’s stunning 4-1 win against promotion rival Nottingham Forest.

Latics will hope that the awards will give them the boost they need as they face Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-final at the DW on Sunday.

The game is a rematch of last season Wembley final which underdogs Wigan won 1-0 after a stunning last minute headed by Ben Watson.

The double swoop caps a remarkable turnaround in Wigan’s fortunes since the 46-year-old German took charge at the DW Stadium in December.

Since his arrival Latics have lost just four times in the Championship and are currently on a run of five straight wins in all competitions.

Dave Bassett, who heads the Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel, said: “Uwe has moved his side firmly into Play-Off contention as we enter the business end of the season.

“He’s made a fantastic impact at The DW Stadium, coupling impressive league form with progress in the FA Cup.”

March got off to a pretty good start for the former Manchester City striker too as goals from Martyn Waghorn, Emmerson Boyce, James McArthur and Jordi Gomez sealed an emphatic 4-1 win away at Forest.

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that that performance was worthy of the the LMA Performance of the Week Award.

Latic boss Rosler will receive a specially engraved crystal football on behalf of the team in a presentation to commemorate the award.
