Salford police chase: Man arrested after attacking woman and stealing her car

A man has been arrested today after attacking a woman with a broken bottle and stealing her car which resulted in a high-speed police pursuit through Salford.

The incident occurred at about 7.50am, when Greater Manchester Police were called to Prescott House in Walkden.

During the struggle, the woman suffered a minor puncture wound to her neck, which is not serious, before the 33-year-old offender stole the woman’s grey Toyota and sped off.

GMP’s Intercept Unit was deployed and officers pursued the stolen car, eventually stopping the Toyota on Chorley Road in Swinton.

Sgt Chris Kitson, from the unit, said: “Thankfully, the woman only suffered minor cuts to her neck but clearly she is in shock after being threatened by a man brandishing a broken bottle.

“Our officers were called to help find the suspect, which lead to a pursuit through Salford.

“This was carried out by GMP officers from our Intercept Team who are trained to pursue vehicles safely. As a result, the stolen car was stopped safely by deflating a number of tyres and the suspected offender arrested.”

No-one was injured during the pursuit and the man was arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in police custody for questioning.

“High-speed pursuits always carry an element of risk but we use specially-trained officers behind the wheel to minimise that risk, protect the public and pursue suspected offenders,” said Sgt Kitson.

“I am pleased that in this instance we arrested the suspected offender and no members of the public were injured during the pursuit.”
