Holy sci-fi fest, Batman! Manchester Comic Con 2013 sees 138% increase – prompting switch to two days in 2014

Video game, sci-fi and comic book fans will descend upon the city in their thousands for the annual Manchester Comic Con this month – so many that organisers have had to extend next year’s to a two day event.

MCM Manchester Comic Con will become a two-day show for the first time ever next July.

This news comes after an incredible 138% increase in ticket sales for this year’s festival on July 20 from last year, with over 26,000 people set to attend.

MCM Expo joint managing director Bryan Cooney said the move was in response to a growing demand from consumers and exhibitors.

“By making Manchester Comic Con a weekend event we are increasing opportunities for everyone,” he said.

Paula Lorimer, Sales Director at Manchester Central, also thanked consumers for the event’s expansion.

“We are thrilled that the event is growing in size and success, adding another day to their tenancy next year, following huge demand from visitors,” she said.

“We are delighted that MCM Expo is returning to Manchester Central in 2014.”

MCM Manchester Comic Con, which emulates the famous London festival, debuted in 2011 and features such popular entertainment as videogames, sci-fi, comics and anime.

This year’s event includes a number of special guests, including Warwick Davis, who has appeared in such Hollywood movies as Willow, Star Wars and Harry Potter.

Other famous faces making an appearance are Kai Owen, best known for playing Torchwood’s Rhys Williams, and Rupert Young and Eoin Macken, stars of hit fantasy series Merlin.

The expanded Manchester Central hall will also host top games publishers Nintendo and Koch Media, while writers such as John McCrea will be at the sold-out Comic Village.

Those who are put off by the high prices of certain festivals will be pleased to know that entry is free for children under 10 accompanied by a full paying adult.
