Stub it out to stop kids sparking up: Stockport Council seek residents’ views on smoke-free play areas

Stockport Council is encouraging residents to have their say on proposals to determine if the public would support the adoption of a smoke-free policy in play areas.

Studies suggest that children are more likely to take up smoking if they’re regularly exposed to it so the council’s aim is to lessen the exposure of second-hand smoke.

‘SmokeFree Play’, which targets Stockport Council-owned play areas, is not legally enforceable but the authority is hoping that people refrain from smoking in areas heavily populated with children.

Cllr John Pantall, Executive Member for Independence and Wellbeing at Stockport Council said: “As a Council we are committed to protecting children from exposure to smoking.

“We are always looking for new ways in which to support this and one idea we want to investigate is the introduction of Smokefree Play Areas.”

Evidence has shown that children learn through example, meaning those who live in areas surrounded by smokers are more likely to pick up the habit themselves.

The code will be voluntary, but it pleads that people cooperate with the councils plan to make smoking less-common in popular children destinations.

Cll Pantall, added: “I would encourage all local residents to have their say on the proposals, in order that we can gauge your opinions and see whether this is an idea the people of Stockport support.”

Residents can have their say by visiting the Council’s website; www.stockport.gov.uk/haveyoursay and completing the online questionnaire.

The consultation will run until October 26.
