It’s all about next season, says Salford Red Devils chief exec as team wind down disappointing year

While Salford Red Devils take on London Broncos in their penultimate Super League fixture on Sunday, chief executive Martin Vickers already has his eye on 2015.

The Red Devils will need to put in a much stronger performance against the relegated Broncos at the AJ Bell Stadium after last week’s 42-6 drubbing away to Wakefield Wildcats.

Having won four of their last seven games, the signs of improvement are there, and having demolished the Broncos 44-18 in the reverse fixture back in February, the team will be confident of a repeat performance.

“After last week’s disappointment at Wakefield, the team have been working hard all week. It will be a significant test for us,” he told MM.

“We have really positive hopes for next year. We want to win our last two games and give ourselves momentum for next season.”

Despite no chance of claiming an all-important top eight berth, two wins from their last two games could yet lift them from 12th out of 14 to potentially as high as ninth, with Vickers seeing these remaining fixtures as vital for the team’s progression.

He added that minimal changes were needed to the outfit however in order to achieve a higher finish than this season.

“We are happy with the squad we have and the recruitments made last season.”

The last game of the Red Devils’ campaign is another home fixture on Friday September 12 against Widnes Vikings.

The Red Devils’s game against London Broncos kicks off at 3pm on Sunday, with tickets still available online or by calling 0161 820 2610.
