By Danielle Wainwright

A body was found floating in the canal at Manchester’s gay village by a couple on a barge yesterday.

The couple reported the body to police at around 3.40pm found near Union Street and the canal was then drained.

Officers as well as an underwater search team recovered the body from the water after cornering off the area.

A spokesperson for GMP said: “Just before 3.40pm on Sunday police were called to Canal Street near Union Street in Manchester city centre, to reports that there was a body believed to be in the water.

“Officers and underwater search teams located and recovered the body from the water.

“Enquiries are on-going to identify the individual and establish if there are any suspicious circumstances.”
