Breaking bread: Manchester Sikh Society offer taste of India as 500 attend Oxford Road charity event

Manchester Sikh Society offered to break bread with the local community by sharing a taste of Indian culture at a charity event on Oxford Road this week.

Seva On The Streets, which took place outside St Peter’s House Church and Chaplaincy, on Oxford Road, attracted around 500 people from across the city.

The food was funded by ASR Charitable Trust – who run clinics in India – and was an open invitation to people off all faiths and races.

Manchester Sikh Society member Amarjodh Landa said: “Bringing the community together is always important, it promotes tolerance, compassion and a sense of contentment.

“As Sikhs we are taught to see the human race as one and community events are a great way of practicing that.

“Langar (food) is a fundamental of the Sikh religion, food is served equally to everyone regardless of religion, gender and any other differentiating factor – Seva On The Streets was a way to bring that idea to the greater community.”

It is the first such event from the society this year but more could be in the pipeline for the coming months.

Landa: “Each human being and every part of this world is a creation of God, whether they are rich or poor we are to serve them wholeheartedly as God is within everyone’s heart and we will do our best to help.”
