Class A drugs and £23,000 cash seized from Wigan home as police crack down on dealing across borough

By Danielle Wainwright

More than £20,000 and a large quantity of Class A drugs were seized last week by police in Wigan as officers raided a number of homes thought to be involved in illegal activity.

Properties in the West Leigh area were targeted by the Leigh Neighbourhood Police Team on Thursday April 4 as warrants were executed under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

At one property on Laburnum Avenue £23,000 and a large quantity of drugs were recovered.

A 28-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug with intent to supply and money laundering.

Police Constable Faye Johnson said: “Cracking down on drugs in our communities is a big priority for Greater Manchester Police and I hope this action shows the people of Leigh just how seriously we are committed to this cause.

“Drugs are a major driving force behind many other crimes such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime, and that is why we are determined to root out all those involved in this trade.”

The woman has been bailed until May 24 pending further inquiries and leaflets were distributed to residents in areas where raids took place to inform them of what had happened.

Police are appealing to the public for any information about those involved in the sale and supply of drugs in the area, locations where drug dealing is taking place or those who they suspect may be using drugs.

PC Johnson said: “I hope this action will send a powerful warning to anyone involved in drugs activity that not only will they end up behind bars, but through Proceeds of Crime Act legislation they will also end up out of pocket.”

Information can be passed onto police directly by calling 101 or through the independent charity Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
