Non-League Matters: FC United striker Mike Norton hails team spirit ahead of crunch clash

FC United face possibly the biggest match of their season tonight as they gear up to face league leaders Chorley but striker Mike Norton is showing no fear.

Karl Marginson’s side host Chorley, who are fresh off the back of a 13-1 mauling of Droylsden, at Gigg Lane in a match that could determine who lifts the Evo-Stik Northern Premier title.

FCUM sit three points behind Garry Flitcroft’s men, with a game in hand, and just six matches of the campaign left and Norton believes United’s team spirit could prove to be key.

“I don’t really look into their 13-1 score too much but we all know that it is going to be another tough match for us,” he told MM.

“Our team spirit has played a big part so far – everyone is fighting for each other, even in training and we know what we can do.

“There will still be a lot of twists and turns in the last few games but we need to just keep doing what we have done so far.”

The Rebels are hoping to avoid the play-offs, having lost three finals in the last four years, and Norton, with 11 goals this season, has hailed the competition for places at the club.

He said: “The squad is fighting for places all over, up to Christmas we had disruptions through injuries and Ollie Banks leaving for Chesterfield was not ideal but we have got players in now and are settled.

“I would presume that there is more pressure on the strikers to score at this stage of the season but Margy (Karl Marginson) wants us to score and we want to work for him.”

A win for FCUM would put the team in pole position as the season enters the defining stage.
