Manchester United hero David Beckham will be part of the provisional 35-man Great Britain Olympic squad when it is announced today.

The former England captain played a pivotal role in securing the London 2012 bid and has been a consistent name to be included in Stuart Pearce’s team.

Pearce can select three over-23 players to be part of his final 18-man squad and Becks, Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard have all been put forward.

The 37-year-old winger has not played in England for nine years but his popularity among players, coaches and fans remains unparalleled.

Beckham received a special award at Wembley on Saturday for reaching 100 caps by UEFA and previously expressed his enthusiasm to play with ex-teammate Giggs.

Team GB’s football matches will be played at Old Trafford, Wembley and the Millennium Stadium and Becks’ inclusion is expected to help shift tickets.

Beckham made 265 appearances for Manchester United from 1993 to 2003, scoring 85 goals, and netted 17 times in 115 England caps.
