Food wars: Manchester’s Guerrilla Eats hold national street food awards at Granada Studios

Guerrilla Eats, champions of Manchester food traders, will welcome the British Street Food Awards to the city’s famous Granada Studios as they host the hotly-contested northern heat.

Traditionally dominated by greasy kebabs and questionable burgers, street food has started to become a whole lot more tasteful and the awards celebrate the finer side of food vans.

Taking place on Saturday June 14, food traders from Sheffield to Newcastle and everywhere in between will gather to try to win over food-lovers and secure their place at the national finals.

Hosting the event will be Guerrilla Eats, a collective of Manchester food traders, who host events across the city in places as random as car-parks or old retail units.

And the buzz around good street-food has been growing over the past few years as people gravitate towards more and more quirky and alternative food trends.

One of the nominees, Mumma Schnitzel, run by Matthew Walsh and Hollie Scrancher out of a vintage Citroen van in Spinningfields, are new to trading but are honoured to be nominated.

“We hope to always have a good time and produce the best standard of food we can possibly create and share this with as many passionate foodies as possible,” said Matthew.

Mumma Schnitzel will be up against a number of other street food traders at the awards which are sure to keep the hungry masses happy.

These include eateries such as Arepa! Arepa! Arepa!, Barnhouse Bistro and Dirty Dogs and Matthew knows they are up against some stern opposition.

“They’re all great traders that can produce some wicked dishes,” he said.

“We’ve got to know many of them and can’t wait to try their dishes again on the night.”

Revellers will be able to vote for their favourite offering at the annual event using the new British Street Food app and can add to the festivities by tweeting #STREETFOODPARTY.

Guerilla Eats is at the forefront of the Manchester movement and Matthew is grateful for the job they have done.

“The lads who run it are great, great guys,” he said.

“Guerrilla Eats has moved street food forward leaps and bounds and can only improve the phenomenon in Manchester.”
