Are you a wimp or warrior? Thousands of Mancunians battle against 10km hell in Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest

By Josh Nicholls

Crawling through inches of mud, sprinting across miles of terrain, each step an agonising milestone to overcome  welcome to the Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest in Manchester.

And 5,000 adrenalin junkies who believe they’ve got what it takes will battle the 10km marathon in the hopes of emerging a victor on Saturday.

Combatants will have to swim across the Ashton canal, plough through mud and climb an eight-foot wall in order to gain the title of ‘survivor’.

The race will start and finish at Sport City just as last year’s inaugural Manchester contest did, an event that was a resounding success according to organisers Rat Race Adventure Sports.

“We love the way in which Mancunians embraced the event and we want to thank Sport City for giving us this amazing canvas on which to create a quirky urban obstacle course,” said Jim Mee, managing director of Rat Race.

This year’s course will also see competitors climb the steps of the Etihad stadium, slide through mud and lift barrels.

Entrants can also expect to tackle around 70 obstacles across the 15-zone course which is designed to be challenging but enjoyable.

“These events are truly unique and provide a brilliant way to see the city from a different perspective or simply prove your athletic credentials,” added Mee.

After completing the gruelling course participants can enjoy a celebratory pint in the popular event beer tent where successful contestants can toast their success with an ice-cold beer or a real ale.
