Sorry seems to ‘Leigh’ the hardest word: Elton John tickets go on sale to see Rocketman touch down in Wigan

By Richard O’Meara

Tickets for legendary rock icon Elton John’s only 2014 North-West appearance went on sale today.

Leigh Sports Village, more synonymous of late with International Rugby League games than international pop megastars, will host the Rocketman next year on June 21.

The gig is one of just three UK dates Sir Elton will play in 2014, and will come on the heels of arena appearances in Paris, Toronto, Oslo and Stockholm.

Sir Elton said: “I’ve been all around the world and I truly enjoy playing my music for fans everywhere I can, but I do so look forward to coming back home to England, especially every summer when I get to perform in places I have never played before, like Leigh.”

The only other shows Sir Elton will play in his home country will take place in Nottingham and Colchester, making the summer date a huge coup for the town.

Simon Toon, Chief Executive of Leigh Sports Village, said: “The fact that a star of Sir Elton John’s magnitude is coming to LSV really puts Leigh on the map and is another way in which we can provide our incredibly supportive community with world-class entertainment.”

With Bob Dylan playing in Blackpool later this month Leigh has become the latest seemingly unlikely North West venue to play host to a Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductee.

The six-time Grammy award winner’s scores of Greater Manchester fans were ecstatic Sir Elton was playing the rare show right on their door step.

Linda Tate, 36, of Salford, said: “I’ve loved Elton since I was four or five, bought everything he’s put and out and seen him almost a dozen times, but for him to be playing right down the road is unbelievable.”

Sir Elton, also known for his activism and ownership of Watford FC, was ranked by Billboard as the most successful male solo artist of all time in 2008.

Dark Knight Rises and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy star Tom Hardy is set to play the I’m Still Standing singer in a biopic which starts shooting in 2014.

Tickets are selling fast but still available at seetickets.com and ticketline.com.

A range of hospitality packages are available, call 01942 487823 to book.
