Robin van Persie's unstoppable form has Ryan Giggs drooling as Manchester United continue trophy hunt

Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs is looking to utilise Manchester United’s Champions League triumph to push on in their hunt for trophies.

The 38-year-old Welsh winger helped the Reds secure qualification as group winners with two games to spare – a priceless gift in their hectic festive fixture list.

And after coming back from a goal down again, United’s 3-1 win will be used as fuel to push on in their season.

"We were all disappointed [last season]," he told Sky Sports. "It wasn’t good enough. We knew we had to do something about it and we have.

"We hope this continues now as we’re in good form, both in the league and the Champions League, so we have to carry it on now."

Shortly after the restart, Jonny Evans was penalised for a clumsy challenged inside the area and Alan coolly stepped up to fire an unstoppable spot-kick past David de Gea.

But it was Robin van Persie’s 80th-minute equaliser that had Giggs awestruck.

"Robin gets one chance and he puts it away," Giggs added. "He’s just scoring goals for fun at the moment. With the form he’s in, his confidence is high and I think everyone knew he was going to score."

Wayne Rooney banished any woes about penalty taking to convert confidently in the 85th, while Javier Hernandez scribed his name on the goal sheet with an injury-time strike.
