Manchester gents meet the original bartender… the barber: Salon becomes saloon in Northern Quarter throwback

By Alex Bysouth

A salon meets saloon experience is offering Manchester chaps the chance to indulge in some classic gentrification on four unique upcoming ‘sippin’ and ‘snippin’ nights.

Drinks dandies The Liquorists, gentleman’s groomers extraordinaire Maclure Barbers and luxury whisky brand Johnnie Walker have teamed up to offer a most unusual and intriguing collaboration.

Half Cut at Maclure will see The Liquorists set up shop in the iconic Hilton Street barbers shop for four nights – April 26 and 27, May 3 and 4.

The gents will be offering classic cut throat shaves or avant-garde cuts and styling, with a cocktail menu showcasing modern twists on recognisable classic whisky cocktails.

“Back in’t day the barber was someone who would cut your hair, chop off an infected limb, extract a tooth and deliver a potion or tonic to take the edge off,” Jody of The Liquorists explained.

“The barber was the original bartender and thus we felt it fitting to offer the people of Manchester an opportunity to sample this with a 21st century flavour.

“One of our particular favourites is ‘Figaro’ Johnnie Walker Gold Label whiskey shaken with coffee-infused Italian vermouth, clementine juice and homemade sour cherry syrup.”

The package is limited to just 12 guests between 7pm and 10pm each night, but those lucky – and brave – enough will receive a complimentary Johnnie Walker cocktail and flight of whiskies.

Bookings are required for a spot in Nick Maclure’s cosy barbers for this three-hour stint, with each person receiving a treatment able to bring up to three guests.

With cuts accompanied by an in-house DJ, cocktails will be flying as guests take advantage of a complementary whisky flight and are offered the chance to purchase bespoke cocktails.

From 10pm to midnight a takeover aspect will commence and those who failed to book can attend the walk-in in an attempt to get their cut as a late-night bar vibe begins.
