Manchester strikes gold with UCI BMX Supercross World Cup ‘unforgettable’ spectacle

As the undisputed capital city for all things on two wheels, Manchester is gearing up once again to host the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup.

Over the weekend of April 18-19 the world’s biggest and best BMX stars will descend on the National Cycling Centre to compete in the first of the World Cup’s five legs.

After successfully hosting the event two years ago, a sell-out crowd is expected to turn up to catch a glimpse of the top-ranked 32 women and 64 men, including Liam Phillips, Britain’s own 2014 Supercross World Cup champion.

Manchester City Council’s executive for culture and leisure, Rosa Battle, spoke of her excitement ahead of the marquee event.

She said: “We are extremely proud of the world class cycling facilities in the city and the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will add to the list of truly unforgettable competitions we’ve hosted.

“Manchester is the home of British Cycling and we’ve played a key part in helping the country’s best athletes develop their talents across all cycling disciplines.”

Due to unprecedented demand, the event will also take place on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon – whereas previously the event had been held on Friday and Saturday nights – so more people can take in the high-octane drama.

Fans will also get the chance to meet their heroes face-to-face at autograph sessions, held on both days.

The home crowd will be treated to a bona-fide favourite in the form of Olympian Phillips, who will lead the line for Great Britain’s BMX team.

This leg of the World Cup makes its return to our city as part of UK Sport’s Gold Event Series, whose mission is to bring over 70 of the world’s biggest events to Britain by 2019.

Individual day tickets are priced from £7, while family deals can be purchased for full weekend tickets.
