Policeman stabbed in Stalybridge – ‘highlighting dangers officers face on a daily basis’

By Helen Le Caplain

A policeman was stabbed after assisting Magistrates Court officials with an operation in Stalybridge today.

The officer was confronted by an 18-year-old woman who attacked him with a weapon believed to be either a knife or screwdriver at around 10.20am this morning on Sand Street.

He was taken to hospital and received treatment for a stab wound at the top of his chest – his injury is not life threatening.

A 39-year-old man and three women aged 18, 22 and 41 have been arrested on suspicion of affray and section 18 assault.

They all remain in police custody for questioning.

Superintendent Neil Evans, based at Ashton-under-Lyne, said: “Thankfully the officer was not seriously injured, but he has been extremely lucky as the puncture wound was close to his neck.

“He is receiving treatment in hospital, where he is making good progress.

“This attack once again highlights the dangers our officers face on a daily basis.”
