Legendary soap actor Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth in Coronation Street, died in Tenerife yesterday morning.

Tarmey starred in the soap for more than 30 years, and tributes have poured in for the 71-year-old who passed away on Thursday morning having suffered ailing health in the past few years.

Jack Duckworth became one of the soaps most loved characters and a statement from the ITV show said they were devastated to hear the news.

A spokesman for Corrie said: “The cast, crew and production team at Coronation Street are devastated to hear of Bill's death. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill's wife and soulmate Ali and their family at this very sad time.”

Tarmey’s family have respectfully asked the media for privacy as they grieve for a husband, father and brother.

Cast members have been paying tribute on twitter.

Antony Cotton, who plays Sean Tully, said: “Goodnight Bill Tarmey. You were the best. We'll miss you so much x.”

Charlie Condou, who plays Marcus Dent, said: “I am devastated to hear that the wonderful Bill Tarmey has died. He was a beautiful, funny and lovely man, and he will be missed by us all.”

Michelle Keegan said: “Bill Tarmey, an honour to of met such a lovely man. True gent, utter legend. Today's a sad day.”

Tarmey made his last appearance in the show in 2010, leaving to care for his son Carl who was battling a life-threatening brain tumour.

"If this hadn't happened they would've had to drag me out of there screaming. It was a wonderful bloody job, especially for an old coffin-dodger," he told ITV Granada, earlier this year.
