Dougie Freedman confesses Bolton were ‘blown out of water’ by Nottingham Forest wages in loan approach

By Scott Hunt

Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman has said that the club made a loan approach for two Nottingham Forest players – but couldn’t compete with the wage demands.

David Vaughan and Nathaniel Chalobah are on loan at the City Ground from Sunderland and Chelsea respectively and Freedman says Bolton made enquiries to take both on loan.

While Forest, who Bolton play on Saturday, could match the wages, Freedman says that the demands of the players were too high for The Trotters

“The boy Vaughan and Chalobah are very, very good loans,” Freedman said at his Friday press conference.

“We made phone calls ourselves on those two particular players and really the demands of the wages blew us out of the water.

“Billy has done very well with getting them and he’s built a very good squad there so it’s going to be a challenge for us.”

Bolton announced at the end of last month that the club is £163.8million in debt.

This means that is it important for Freedman to operate on a sensible transfer and wage budget.

Three of Bolton’s next four league games are against sides in the play-off places.

Freedman though is unconcerned about who his side play, whether they are at the top of the table or not.

“It’s a very even division and there is not a lot in games,” the Scot said.

“It doesn’t concern me who we’re playing in this division up the top or down the bottom.”

Bolton, fresh from last week’s home defeat of Blackpool in the FA Cup, are looking to use that as a boost to spring up the table.

Freedman has stressed the importance of picking up more points at home, starting against Forest on Saturday.

“I believe we have got to get more results that equal our performances,” he said.

“If we can start the game with the right sort of tempo and have the right attitude at the beginning of the game then we are a very good team.

“We’re either defending well and not scoring enough or scoring enough and leaking goals at the back so we’ve got to make sure that balance is right.

“And if we do that then I believe that we are in for more wins at home.”
