French town bombed during WW1 raise glass of specially-brewed beer to thank Stockport for rebuilding homes

A French town that was annihilated during World War One is brewing a special beer to mark the centenary of Stockport helping restore the town to its former glory.

In August 1914 the French town of Haybes was bombed and burnt down, killing 60 people. Stockport and other UK town and cities pledged to help rebuild Haybes and other towns in the Ardennes.

Haybes is marking the centenary of its darkest days with commemorative events throughout 2014 and will brew a special beer called Stockport & Haybes.

The Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Chris Murphy, said: “It is very important that we remember the war and the effects that it had on families in Stockport, Britain and around the world.

“Stockport is proud of its modern day international links which seek to bring together individuals, but recent contact by residents of Haybes has highlighted a much older link.”
