‘Big blow’: David Silva sweats over fitness as Manchester City gear up for Chelsea FA Cup semi-final

By Colin Henrys

Manchester City star David Silva admitted missing Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea through injury would be a huge blow.

The tricky Spaniard was taken off with a tight hamstring minutes before the end of City’s Manchester derby win at Old Trafford on Monday.

And the man nicknamed ‘Merlin’ by adoring City fans now faces a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s Wembley showdown.

“It would be a big blow for me,” he said. “It is a game every player wants to play.

“I have to have tests done. We will see the results of the tests and we will see whether I can be ready to play on Sunday or not.”

Silva played in the Blue’s FA Cup semi-final victory against Manchester United two years ago and went close to opening the scoring in the final against Stoke City a month later.

Boss Roberto Mancini told reporters after Monday night’s derby he expected his playmaker to miss out at the weekend however.

And Silva – who starred for Spain as they won the European Championships in the summer – admitted ahead of his fitness tests today he was a doubt.

“I felt it at the end and I still feeling it now,” he added.

“We will have to wait and see what the tests show. Hopefully I will be able to recover for Sunday.

“Let’s see what happens but if I can’t there are always team-mates that can play.”
