Bury’s Flitcroft hopes Gary Neville’s words of wisdom spur side on to promotion

Bury manager David Flitcroft is heeding the advice of a Manchester United legend and taking the season one game at a time in search of promotion.

The Shakers had a mixed Easter, winning away at Cambridge United on Good Friday before suffering defeat at the JD Stadium against Morecambe on Monday.

And Flitcroft says he is looking no further than Saturday’s game against Newport County after listening to Bury born Gary Neville.

“Gary Neville said last week you have to play one game at a time and don’t let anything take your focus away from that in search of promotion,” he said.

“We have purposely not given ourselves a points target, last season when we were struggling we had objectives to hit and we used it quite successfully.

“But this season you just don’t know what’s going to happen and I think there will be quite a few more twists and turns.”

Bury face a Newport side who are also in the hunt for promotion and currently occupy the final play-off place, sitting eight points behind the Shakers.

County picked up all three points in the corresponding fixture earlier this season and like Flitcroft’s men come into the game looking to bounce back from defeat.

Bury have yet to win in 10 trips to the South Wales side, drawing 0-0 at Rodney Parade last season and will need to rectify that to maintain the promotion hunt.

Danny Nardiello, who is two goals away from his season target of 13, is targeting getting back to winning ways in a difficult encounter.

“It’ll be a tough game they’re a physical side, it’s a game we can win but we’re going to have to work hard and put in a performance,” he said.

“We’ve got to believe we can go up automatically, with six games left we’re going to go into every game thinking we can and wanting to win.

“Our form is brilliant at the moment, we’ve won eight in the last ten, so if we can keep that going we can definitely do it.”
