Woman falls from Tameside bridge in suspected suicide – police appeal to couple who witnessed death

By Glen Keogh

A woman is suspected of falling to her death from a Tameside bridge after climbing on the wrong side of the railings – police now want to trace a couple she was speaking to moments before the tragedy.

Shortly after 11.50pm on Saturday police were told that a woman was precariously placed on a bridge overlooking the M67 motorway.

A short time after officers attended the 36-year-old woman fell and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tameside Council CCTV operators who called police noticed that the woman had been speaking to a couple who may have tried to talk her down on the bridge, and when officers arrived at the scene they were asked to stand back.

Police Constable Paul Hailwood said: “Our thoughts are with the family of this woman, who have understandably been left devastated.

“We have officers supporting them through this difficult time and are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the full facts around what happened. Our findings will be passed to the coroner.”

Police need to find the couple who spoke to the woman and left as the police arrived.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death but police enquiries are ongoing.

PC Hailwood added: “These people will no doubt remember what happened and may well have found out that this ended in tragedy. They are in no trouble whatsoever, we just need them to tell us what they know.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4741.
