Robbers rip open cash machine with ANGLE GRINDER after threatening terrified Chorlton Tesco staff

By Matt Scrafton

Robbers armed with an angle grinder, an axe and a crowbar cut their way into a Chorlton Tesco cash machine after forcing terrified staff to open a secure office.

Three masked men burst into the office which allowed them to get to the back of the cash machine on Withington Road, shortly after 1pm on Thursday May 9.

They dragged two security staff out, before using the angle grinder to open the cash machine from the back, leaving with a box of cash.

A Mercedes was waiting for the gang’s escape, and it fled towards Dudley Road before being found abandoned on Park Mews in Whalley Range.

Detective Constable Mark Evans said: “The offenders managed to steal a large amount of cash from the machine and left the Tesco car park at speed.”

The offenders were all wearing dark clothing, and police have released a CCTV image of one of the offenders.

DC Evans added: “If you were at Tesco at the time and saw the robbery happen we would urge you to contact police.

“Alternatively if you saw the vehicle in the area before the incident or afterwards in the Dudley Road area we would very much like to hear from you.”

Witnesses with information should call police on 0161 856 4973 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
