Shortcut goes horribly wrong: Woman impales leg on Fallowfield railings and is cut free with metal inside her

By Glen Keogh

A young woman got impaled on railings in Fallowfield and had to be cut from the fence with the metal still inside her leg when a shortcut plan failed.

The 22-year-old was found on the railings on Moseley Road, Fallowfield at 6.40am on Saturday June 8 by firefighters from Withington and Moss Side after they were called out.

Police were already there holding the woman up, and ‘taking her weight’, to relieve the pressure off the calf of her right leg, where the railing was impaled.

Crew Manager John Burgess said: “It seems she had taken a short cut and it went wrong.

“She was conscious and breathing – obviously upset – and she was taken to hospital by ambulance.”

Firefighters had to leave the railing in the woman’s leg for medical experts to deal with and cut through the metal using cutting gear.

The Enhanced Rescue Unit from Ashton Fire Station, which has specialist cutting gear on it, was also called to the scene but the crews from Withington and Moss Side had rescued the woman before they arrived.
