‘Despicable’ Gorton crooks steal ‘sentimental’ necklace from ‘vulnerable’ old woman in own home after break in

A ‘vulnerable’ elderly lady has had a ‘sentimental’ gold necklace snatched from her neck by masked robbers in a ‘despicable attack’ in her Gorton home.

The woman, who is in her 70s, was attacked in the early hours of Tuesday morning when three men wearing balaclavas broke into her house.

They grabbed the St Christopher medallion necklace – which was engraved with her late husband’s date of birth – before demanding money and further items of jewellery.

The men also made off with money, a gold choker, a gold medallion of Our Lady, a gold bangle with a flower design and a man’s white gold ring with a single diamond.

Detective Sergeant Claire McGuire, of GMP’s City of Manchester team, said: “This was a despicable robbery by men who preyed on a vulnerable elderly woman in her own home.

“The incident was extremely traumatic for the victim and she is heartbroken that the St Christopher, in particular, was stolen.

“The necklace means the world to her and she desperately wants it returned as it reminds her of her late husband.”

Police believe it is likely that the necklace will be sold on for profit and are urging potential buyers to be vigilant.

“It is possible that someone could have been offered this jewellery for sale and therefore may have information about it,” added Detective Sergeant McGuire.

“I would urge them, or anybody else who knows something, to please contact police.”

The offenders are said to have spoken with Manchester accents and are described as men wearing dark balaclavas.

Anyone with any information about the whereabouts of the jewellery or the robbery itself should call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
