Being from Manchester is HINDRANCE not help for up and coming bands, says rockers Twisted Wheel

By Gemma Lee

Coming from Manchester is a HINDRANCE rather than a help for up and coming bands, claims mod rock band, Twisted Wheel.

Twisted Wheel, a old school, gritty rock ‘n’ roll Manchester group, are set to headline ‘A Declaration II’ on Sunday August 11 at Sound Control, Manchester.

The four-piece will be playing alongside other artists from the area such as Danny Mahon, The Last Party and ‘exciting new five-piece’ The Minx.

Jonny Brown, lead vocalist and guitarist, said: “For us especially in Manchester it’s always a good one, because it’s a home town gig, it’s always rocking and mental but different every time we play here.”

Despite Manchester supplying a great gig, Twisted Wheel revealed that being a Mancunian when you’re in the music industry is far from career boosting.

He said: “Coming from Manchester is an absolute nightmare in music, the rest of the country just slag you off and think you’re fucking arseholes, to be honest I try and keep it [coming from Manchester] quiet.”

Sounds to be expected from the band can be described as a mixture of 70’s punk, 60’s rock and roll and mod sounds with a ‘Manchester swagger’.

The ‘gobby, indie group’ has been one of Manchester’s most hotly-tipped bands since rocking a packed crowd, supporting Oasis’ Heaton Park gig.

He added: “I’m sure there’ll be something exciting going down, it’ll be good to go back and rock out.”

Famous music legends, Paul Weller and Liam Gallagher lie amongst the band’s ever increasing fan base.

One of the most inspirational and ‘breath-taking’ moments for the band was when Liam Gallagher described them as ‘a breath of fresh air’ in front of around 15,000 people at Wembley arena.

Jonny Brown said: “I’ve always been a fan of Oasis since hearing ‘What’s the Story Morning Glory’, and then 10 years later we were playing with them!”

Jonny Brown’s ‘all time hero’ Paul Weller, went to see them at London’s 100 club and 2 days after was on the phone to the band offering them use of his studio and the opportunity to support him on his Summer Forest tour.

Taking Weller up on his offer, the group have used the recording studio numerous times, describing it as ‘inspirational and mind-blowing’.

Brown said: “You are just there recording and you’ve got all his memorabilia on the wall.”

Despite little airplay of the band in recent years, they have just been announced to play at Leeds and Reading Festival this year.

He added: “The main thing we want to do is just get records out, back to where we were and bigger, show people we’ve not disappeared and six years later we’re still going and it’s good to know people still like us and still care.

“We just want to get back out and make music for people.

“The wheel is still rolling, there’ll be a lot of gigs and a tour coming up and a big thank you to all the fans for sticking with us.”
