Manchester United a step down? Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao declares he is already at ‘best club in the world’

Real Madrid’s versatile-star Fabio Coentrao has explained why a move to Manchester United would have been a step down for his career, much to the dismay of the Reds’ fans.

Red Devils boss David Moyes made it no secret that he was looking to strengthen on the left side placing bids for both Coentrao and Everton left-back Leighton Baines in the summer transfer window.

Real Madrid’s resourceful international told Portugese paper Jogo he turned down a move to Old Trafford during the transfer window because he is already at the biggest club in the world.

“There was the possibility of joining Manchester United, but I stayed at Real Madrid, and that’s what matters,” said Coentrao.

“It would have been bad if I had to stay despite having the chance to move to a better club, but that didn’t happen as I already am at the best club in the world.

“I want to do better than I did last season, although I was at a very high level already. I want to show everyone that I deserve to be at Real Madrid.”

The Los Blancos star was frequently featured on the substitute’s bench last season as Brazil’s Marcelo Vieira has established himself as the first choice left-back in Madrid.

To add to Coentrao’s woes, any possibility of him playing in an advanced position has been quashed after Madrid completed a world-record signing of Gareth Bale bringing the Welshman to the Bernabeu for €100million.
