Manchester City are celebrating after playmaker Yaya Toure was chosen among ten Premier League stars to be shortlisted for African Player of the Year.

The ex-Barcelona midfielder has not shown a return to form so far this season, despite a flurry of goals at the beginning of the campaign, but his championship-winning performances of last year have cemented the Ivorian as a strong contender for the award.

And the dominant Blue joins former and current Wigan attacking players Victor Moses and Arouna Kone on the nomination list – the winner will be announced in December.

The announcement comes as the club hosts a ‘Yaya Toure Day’ to celebrate his 100th appearance for City during their 2-1 over Fulham two weeks ago.

A club spokesman said: “Yaya clocked up his 100th appearance for the Blues against Fulham a fortnight ago and has been the heart and soul of Roberto Mancini’s team ever since he joined the Blues from Barcelona in 2010.

“This is a man who has scored goals that have helped change the history of the club, let’s not forget.”

After storming to the prestigious accolade last year, Toure is hoping to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since Samuel Eto’o – who has won or been in the top three for the award an unprecedented eight times.
