‘We’ll see what happens’: Rooney breaks silence on Manchester United future admitting he is happy…for now

By Tom Belger

Wayne Rooney has finally broken his silence over the summer’s most protracted transfer saga and declared that he is happy playing at Old Trafford…for now.

The England striker was publicly pursued by Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea during the transfer window after the 27-year-old was reportedly unhappy with his role at United.

However, after months of speculation Rooney has now admitted that his dissatisfaction came from being deployed in midfield by Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I know myself that last year probably wasn’t my best season,” Rooney told reporters while on international duty.

“But there were times when I was playing in different positions and I felt I didn’t really get that consistent run of games.”

Rooney was occasionally forced to drop into the centre of United’s midfield last season and, consequently, only managed to score 12 goals compared to the 27 he netted the year before.

Despite his dissatisfaction Rooney has admitted that he feels fitter and happier under the management of David Moyes but refused to comment on his long term future at United.

“I’ll have more discussions with the club and we’ll see what happens from there,” he said.

The former Everton striker has started the season in blistering form scoring five goals in his first eight games and was voted the club’s player of the month for September.

“Honestly, the training has been so hard, we’ve done a lot of different types of training, a lot more running -long running, quicker running, and sharper running. I feel that’s been of benefit to me,” he said.

“I feel as fit as I have done. I’ve had a couple of injuries in pre-season but I feel great. I’m in good shape, just wanting to play and train every day.”

United’s top goal scorer this season also revealed why he remained silent over his future during the summer transfer window.

“I didn’t want to come out and say anything; I just wanted to concentrate on my football. That’s what I’ve done, that’s what I’ll continue to do,” Rooney said.

“I’m not going to go around saying: ‘I wanted to stay’ or ‘I want to leave’.

“I’ve been settled. My wife had a new child, I’ve been really happy, I’ve been focused. I’m just delighted to be back playing, and free of injury and fit.”
