Forget the international break, come and cheer on Oldham! Manager Lee Johnson drums up support

Manager Lee Johnson wants plenty of support as Oldham Athletic aim to extend their unbeaten run against Walsall on Saturday.

Oldham have gone nine games without defeat in all competitions after squeezing past Barnsley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night and sit 12th in League One.

Johnson’s side won three and drew three in all competitions in September, keeping three clean sheets along the way which earned the 33-year-old a nomination for the Manager of the Month Award.

“We all feel that we are on the cusp of something,” Johnson said.

“However, we are one loss away from looking like we are struggling again so we have just got to keep chipping away.

“The more people that come through the gate and support us can only benefit the players.”

Saturday’s opponents Walsall are 16th, having registered twelve points from their ten games this season.

They are unbeaten in four games in all competitions, held high-flying Bristol City to a draw last weekend and picked up an eye-catching 3-0 win over Doncaster two weekends ago.

The Saddlers will be without Sam Mantom (knee), Tom Bradshaw (hamstring), and Romaine Sawyers (international duty) for Saturday’s trip up to Sportsdirect.com Park.

“They have a really good manager who is punching above his weight at that club,” said Johnson.

“They drew with Bristol City at the weekend, who are one of the toughest in the division.

“We need everyone to get behind us because it’s going to be a challenging game.”

Johnson feels the support of fans at Sportsdirect.com Park could be crucial to his team’s success.

With no Premier League or Championship games this weekend, owing to the international break, Johnson hopes to attract those looking for a game to attend.

“We have got a nice atmosphere going at the moment and that’s how I want to see it,” he said.

“We need everyone to get behind us because it’s going to be a challenging game.”
