Lancashire cut Newby and Agathangelou in Red Rose clear out

Lancashire veteran Oliver Newby has been released after 12 years at the club while Andrea Agathangelou will also be without a club.

Relegated Lancashire recently announced that Ashley Giles will take over as head coach next season, and the two players may not be the last to be cut.

Giles replaces club legend Glen Chapple, who has spent the season as player-coach, but has been unable to find a place in the team for Newby (no.8 bowler pictured above).

“Oliver has not been able to hold down a regular spot team,” Chapple told the club website. “I hope there is an opportunity for him to do so elsewhere.”

The 30-year-old seamer has taken 141 wickets at an average of 34.16 in 78 appearances across all formats of the game for Lancs in his 12-year career.

Agathangelou has spent comparatively little time at the club – just four years – but the 24-year-old does hold the distinction of being the first Cypriot to play first-class cricket.

“Andrea is an extremely talented cricketer with a good attitude,” said coach Chapple. “Given the right opportunity he could reach his true potential.”

The South African-born batsman scored 736 runs at an average of 24.53 for Lancs, the highlight being his only first-class hundred, hitting 121 against Hampshire back in May 2013.

He tweeted: “Thank you to Lancashire and everyone involved in my journey! Sad my days at Lancashire have come to an end.”
