Preview: Olivia Gatwood @ The Dancehouse, Manchester

Internationally renowned poet Olivia Gatwood will be performing her gut wrenching and life affirming poetry first-hand at The Dancehouse in Manchester.

In what is set to be a unique performance of her new book Life of the Party, Gatwood, 27, will weave together a collection of odes and anecdotes of the trials and triumphs of growing up as a woman in modern day.

The New Mexico-born poet has received national recognition for her writing and was a finalist at Brave New Voices, Women of the World and the National Poetry Slam.

The raw performance – which takes place on Tuesday, October 22 – will see Gatwood tackle a number of candid topics and attempt to answer a series of questions, including: How does one grow from a girl to a woman in a world wracked by violence?

In a previous interview, Gatwood said that her work is meant to challenge herself as well as others.

She told Split Lip: “I think it is my responsibility to challenge my readers, to share when my thoughts and feelings are evolving away from previous work I’ve created.

“And to allow myself to be challenged and change in the process—because as a person whose medium is language, which is in a constant state of flux—to be stubborn to that change is so, so detrimental.”

The Manchester date promises to be a piercingly candid, riotous and empowering journey through the psyche of what it means to be a girl and a woman, and the challenge of briefly being both.
