Rafael delighted Manchester United avoid another case of the 'Blues' with demon-banishing victory over Everton

Rampaging Manchester United right-back Rafael admits Sunday’s win over Everton banished last year’s demons against the Merseyside club.

The Brazilian dug out a man-of-the-match performance – setting up Robin van Persie’s goal – as the Red Devils marched on for a commanding 12-point lead over champions Manchester City.

Last season saw the Toffees fight back to equalise late-on, and Rafael revealed there was an extra incentive to get the job done this time round.

“It was a very important win,” he told MUTV.

“Everyone talked about us losing the title against Everton last season, so we all worked hard to beat them.

“It was good to keep a clean sheet but the most important thing at this stage is the points.

“We just have to stay focused and play as we have been doing.

“We know what happened last year but we have a lot of experienced players here so we'll look to keep improving and keep playing well.”

United’s attention now turns to their mouth-watering clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday, in which Cristiano Ronaldo will line up against his old club for the first time.

Los Merengues trail Barcelona by 16 points in La Liga, but will approach the Champions League in good spirits after Ronaldo’s hat-trick inspired them to a 4-1 victory over Sevilla.

It will be the first time in ten years that the European heavyweights have clashed – the last encounter ending up 6-5 over a pulsating two legs.
