Man, 30, dies of suspected drug overdose after club night at Manchester Academy

A man has died of a suspected drug overdose following a club night at the Manchester Academy on the weekend.

The 30-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was at Sunday night’s IllumiNaughty club night.

He was admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary in the early hours of Monday morning.

Greater Manchester Police officers attended the hospital at 4.30am on Monday and were told that the man had become sick while at the Oxford Road venue.

The victim died on Monday morning, and an investigation has now been launched following an inconclusive post mortem into the cause of death.

Detective Inspector Ian Cottrell of GMP said the force is doing what it can to determine the origin of the drugs and what happened in the moments leading up to the man becoming ill.

“Sadly this man has died after becoming unwell during a night out at The Academy and I want to reassure his friends and family as well as the wider community that we have launched an investigation to establish exactly what happened,” he said.

“While we are keeping an open mind we suspect that drugs are a factor in this man’s death.”

IllumiNaughty is a public club night that is organised by external promoters and has been held at The Academy since February 2013.

GMP are appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who were at the Academy on Saturday.

“Were you in the venue on Saturday night and did you see anything untoward or suspicious?” said DI Cottrell. “Did you see anyone selling drugs inside the venue or someone collapse inside?

“If so, please call us.”

Det Insp Cottrell also warned the public of the dangers associated with taking illegal narcotics.

“I would also like to take the opportunity to remind people of the potential consequences of taking illicit drugs,” he said.

“You can never know exactly what you are taking or what reaction you will have and as this incident so tragically highlights, the consequences can be dire, not only for the person taking them but also for their family and friends.”
