O2 Apollo hit and run: Driver flees on foot as Manchester pedestrian left ‘critical’

A pedestrian has been left fighting for his life after a car ploughed into him near the O2 Apollo in Ardwick this morning.

The incident, which happened at around 6am on Ardwick Green South in Manchester, saw the driver of the silver Vauxhall Vectra abandon his vehicle and flee on foot from the scene of the crime.

Officers are appealing to the public to help them with identification of the victim, who was left with serious injuries requiring hospitalisation at Salford Royal.

He is described as in his late 30s to early 40s, black, around 5ft 10in tall, with short dark hair and slim build. He has distinctive teeth, with a large gap between his two front teeth and with the tooth to the right of his front teeth missing.

At the time of the incident he was wearing blue jeans, silver or grey trainers, a black puffa-style jacket, black fleece jacket and a red t-shirt.

A 33-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Road closures to Ardwick Green South, Downing Street, Hamsell Road and the roundabout outside the Apollo have all now been lifted.
Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward as a matter of urgency to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741.
