Manchester United got it right with David Moyes appointment, insists Jose Mourinho on Chelsea return

By Chris Bailey

While Jose Mourinho will not be lining up against old sparring partner Sir Alex Ferguson next season, he believes Manchester United have the right heir to the throne in David Moyes.

Mourinho, who returns to Chelsea after a six-year absence, was linked to the Red Devils hot-seat before Moyes was given the nod.

And despite the Scot’s failure to win a trophy at Everton, the ‘happy one’ insists he has enough experience to prove a success at Old Trafford.

“United have made good decisions,” said Mourinho.

“David proved himself at Everton. OK, no trophies, but it’s not easy to get a trophy when you manage Everton and he was not far from doing that.

“He has good experience, good work. I am more than happy, and I feel very happy for him.”

Moyes was the third-longest serving manager in the Premier League behind Ferguson and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger before ending an 11-year spell with the Toffees.

United have a history of letting managers adapt – it took Ferguson three seasons for his first trophy – and Mourinho expects the club to be patient while the ex-defender learns the ropes.

“Man United will give him the time to adapt to a new dimension,” he added.

“He has never played a Champions League match so people can’t expect him to be a fish in water in that first match.

“Give him time, stability. United is perfect for that, so that’s a very good choice.”
