Vintage Village comes to Stockport Market Hall

Vintage Village comes to Stockport Market Hall

Vintage enthusiasts and shoppers took to Stockport’s historic Covered Market Hall on Sunday for the town’s Vintage Village event.

The idea was launched in September last year by Stockport Market trader, Village Vintage Clothing and vintage retailer Tintrunk, in partnership with Stockport Council.

Held on the second Sunday of each month, the market showcases a wide range of vintage and local handmade crafts, as well as encouraging new small businesses.

Sarah Norris, co-organiser of The Vintage Village event, said: “Vintage enthusiasts really enjoy the chance to dress up and we are always amazed by some of the fabulous outfits we see at our fairs.”

Bill and Michelle Bridges were attending their third market as 1940s traders, selling clothing, ornaments and toys from the era.

Michelle said: “It’s getting bigger and bigger! I think people like to look back.”

“Well there’s not very much to look forward to!” added Bill.

The last few years have seen a vintage boom with girls in particular taking vintage items such as clothing and adapting them to their own style.

“It’s individual isn’t it?” said Michelle, “You know that you’re going to go out and no one else is going to be wearing what you’re wearing.”

The theme for this month’s event was based around the launch of the world’s first communication satellite, Telstar, which took to the skies on 10th July 1962.

Councillor Kevin Hogg, Executive Member for Regeneration said the Council has been working with market traders to develop a wider programme to encourage greater footfall in the town centre on Sundays.

He said: “The Vintage Village events have proved to be very successful attracting new shoppers to Stockport Market and the town centre. I would encourage people to come along and see what’s on offer at The Vintage Village event.”
