We’re going to Bolton to represent: Bury’s David Flitcroft has League Cup road message for his troops

Bury manager David Flitcroft remains unfazed by his League Two favourites’ opening defeat at the weekend and says they can make up for it in their Capital One Cup fixture with Bolton.

Bury suffered defeat at home to Cheltenham in League Two on Saturday while neighbours Bolton also fell at the first hurdle, losing 3-0 to Watford in the Championship.

The two local rivals have had few chances to face each other in recent years, with the last meeting between the two sides being a League Cup clash in 2002 where Bury claimed a 1-0 victory at the Reebok Stadium.

Bury manager David Flitcroft, who was born in Bolton, says his side are determined to beat their Greater Manchester neighbours.

“I love the fact we’ve been built up to be a top team but we’ve got to handle it,” he told BBC Radio Manchester.

“We will find solutions. Me, the coaching staff and the chairman, that’s what we do.

“We’ve worked really hard on trying to build a strategy on recruitment and we’ve recruited some fantastic players.

“I don’t like going anywhere not representing what we are about as a group.”

The local neighbours are poised at 28 wins each going into the game tomorrow at the Reebok stadium, with both teams ready to put the opening day of the season behind them and claim local bragging rights.

Bolton defender Kevin McNaughton told the club’s website that it’s important not to dwell on Saturday’s result.

“We’ve worked hard over pre-season to get our shape right for the start of the season and it’s been undone with two early chances they had,” he said.

“Hopefully that result will be a wake-up call for everybody in the squad as we go into our next game – we need to bounce back and that’s the objective right now.”
