Manchester primed for rugby carnival as European Sevens Grand Prix Series comes to AJ Bell Stadium

Hosts England will hope to follow their triumph in the previous leg of the European Rugby Sevens Grand Prix Series by winning at the AJ Bell Stadium this weekend.

England, winners of the second leg in Moscow and tournament pacesetters, kick off the event on Saturday against Romania, before runners-up Scotland face Spain in match three and third-place finishers Wales take on first-leg champions France in match five.

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) are expecting a carnival atmosphere at the Sale Sharks and Salford Red Devils base for the third of four legs in Manchester, the tournament having started in Lyon before visiting Russia and ending in Bucharest on September 20/21.

“Sevens is such an exciting game, you can’t help but love it, whether you’re playing or watching,” said Christian Lewis-Pratt (main picture), second behind Belgium’s Vincent Hart in the individual points-scoring chart.

“The players are renowned for being very fast, very athletic with great handling skills but people still underestimate how physically demanding Sevens is.”

In all 12 teams will be on show, also including Belgium, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Russia.

The action will culminate on Sunday, when the Cup, Bowl and Plate winners will be decided, the final scheduled for 5.05pm.

Tickets are available from £10 here.
