Life of comic Robin Williams celebrated at Manchester Gorilla all-day film screening

In memory of Hollywood and comedy icon Robin Williams, Manchester’s Gorilla will be hosting an all- day event to celebrate the work of one of the most naturally talented actors to have graced our screens.

The event will showcase the talents of the much loved actor, with four of his best known pieces being screened – Hook, Jumanji, Dead Poets Society and of course, Mrs Doubtfire – this Sunday September 13.

These films among countless others were regulars in millions of households across the globe and the day will surely be one to remember for fans of all ages.

It will be an opportunity for those who grew up watching Williams and pretending that they were Peter Pan to wallow in the nostalgia of their youth.

And for those unfamiliar with Williams’ films it will be a fantastic introduction to his weird and wonderful world and a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

However, as well as being an opportunity for fans to relive their youth, there is also a much more serious cause behind the day itself.

Gorilla has pledged that 20% of every ticket will go to the mental health charity Manchester Mind and will help with those suffering with mental illness.

A spokesperson for Manchester Mind said: “We really appreciate the kind support of RAD Screenings and Gorilla this weekend”.

The event comes fittingly at the end of National Suicide Prevention Week and the day, which is devoted to removing the taboo nature of discussing mental health issues.

Such events are a vital source of support for Manchester Mind as it receives no funding from its national body and is a fully independent charity.

Mind told us, that last year 5000 people ended their lives, of which 78% were men, yet only 1.68% of the national health budget is spent on mental health and increasing awareness.

They said: “The Robin Williams screening will be a positive celebration of his life, but we also hope a chance for people to start a conversation”.

The day will start at 12pm and will run through until 9pm, with all day tickets costing £15 there is the option to pay per film for £6 (plus a charity donation).
