Manchester boxer Tyson Fury’s homophobic tweets do the ‘human race no favours’, claims boxing boss

By Alan Ross

Manchester  boxer Tyson Fury will be investigated by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) following a series of homophobic comments that appeared on his Twitter feed yesterday.

The tirade was aimed against former world champion Lennox Lewis and current WBA, IBF and WBO title holder Wladimir Klitschko.

This is the second time that the heavyweight has found himself in trouble for what he has written on the social media site.

In March of this year he was fined £3,000 for writing homophobic comments on Twitter.

One of the tweets, which have since been deleted, read: “I think the @LennoxLewis &wlad@Klitschko r 100% Homosexuals!!”

Another said: “There is so many f****** pricks on hear! All b*** job giving c****!! I’d love to see u lot I’d cut your throats u pack of t*******.”

The matter has yet to be discussed with the stewards of the BBBofC but its secretary general Robert Smith described the comments as very disappointing.

When asked if the comments helped the sport Smith told the BBC: “I don’t think it does the human race any favours.”

“We’re not very happy about it. We will deal with it in our normal way,” he said.

“I just can’t understand how anyone would want to say anything like that at all – it’s very disappointing.”

Peter Fury, Tyson’s uncle and trainer, told the Metro that the comments were ‘stupid’.

“Sometimes we have to refrain from saying the things we really want to say,” he said.

“Tyson does get bored or frustrated at times and he’ll be lying there on his bed using Twitter having a laugh. It’s quite possible that he gets misinterpreted at times.

“We all do stupid things when we’re young. Tyson gets a load of abuse on Twitter but he needs to learn not to react.

“He should put it down to people’s ignorance. Tyson is punishable by his actions where all these other people on Twitter who tweet him aren’t.”

Fury was recently scheduled to fight fellow Briton David Haye in Manchester but Haye withdrew because of cut above his eye received training for the fight.

The bout has been rescheduled for February 8 next year.

Fury also directed his Twitter tirade at Haye, claiming he would ‘snap his jaw to bits’.

Haye later responded to some of the abuse: “It seems @Tyson_Fury needs to ease up on his “Medication” or seek an Exorcist, or he’ll get sectioned at this rate #StraightJacketRequired.”
