‘No winners today’: Jealous husband jailed for strangling school teacher wife to death

A Stockport husband, who strangled the mother of his two children to death with her bra strap and an electrical flex after becoming paranoid she was seeing another man, has been jailed for murder.

Abul Khashem Miah of Florist Street, Shaw Heath, was found guilty today and sentenced to a minimum of 15 years at Manchester Crown Court.

Miah fatally injured his wife, before he called emergency services to say that he had given her ‘a slap’ to stop her shouting at their home on Longford Road West and she was dead.

The services found her wrapped in a duvet with wounds consistent with being stranged.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, said: “It is clear from everyone we have spoken to, the victim was a popular member of society and was much loved.

“It is clear that she touched the lives of everyone she met and her death has devastated everyone who knew her. Our thoughts are particularly with her family.

“Tragically, in cases like this, only two people really know what happened on that fateful day.

“But it is clear from the severe injuries she sustained that Miah’s claim he merely tried to stop her from shouting was nothing more than a pack of lies to cover up his guilt.

“The fact he maintained the lie throughout the trial, rather than admit what he did, has merely compounded the grief and upset the victim’s family have had to endure.

Miah was initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

He told the officers the two had had consexual sex that evening, but that they got into an argument which turned physical.

He then told the police he had put his forearm over her mouth as they were wrestling on the floor in order to prevent an argument.

And then when returning back to the bedroom after leaving, Miah saw that she was not moving and, thinking she was dead, called 999.

Officers attended and recalled that they found the victim wrapped up, describing the scene as being similar to how an undertaker would wrap a body.

She was rushed to hospital and remained in a coma until she tragically died on August 23 2014.

A post-mortem examination revealed the true extent of her injuries including ligature marks around her neck, consistent with being strangled.

DCI Millington said: “Despite bravely fighting while in a coma, her injuries were too severe and sadly she succumbed a few days later.

“Abul has now been convicted of his terrible crime thanks to the work of the investigating officers, CPS and the prosecution team who exposed the holes in his story.

“Nevertheless, there are no winners today. The family have been left with an irreplaceable and devastating hole in their lives.

“I can only hope that people take heed of this tragic incident, and if they too are suffering abuse that they come forward and report it so we can protect them before it escalates.”
