Buy big Roberto! Former Manchester City target man Niall Quinn urges Mancini to splash the cash

Popular former Manchester City striker Niall Quinn believes his old club need to buy big this summer if they are to compete with rivals Manchester United.

Despite spending more than their Manchester rivals last season, the Blues missed out on a number of top targets including United star Robin van Persie.

And the former Republic of Ireland striker ‒ who played for City from 1990 to 1996 ‒ anticipates there being no repeat this time around.

"I manager Roberto Mancini is the right man, then I can see him adding one or two to the squad," he told BBC Sport.

"And I'd say those one or two could be spectacular.

"I would imagine Manchester City's scouting network, regardless of who the manager is next season, is eyeing up the best of the best that may become available."

The rangy forward ‒ who also played for Arsenal and Sunderland ‒ threw his backing behind Italian boss Roberto Mancini too.

Quinn was in the Sky Sports commentary box when Sergio Aguero's famous strike won City the title on the final day of last season.

And he hopes ending City's 44-year wait to be champions of England will be enough to earn Mancini another year in charge, despite the Blues currently being 12 points behind league-leaders United.

"It's hard to say Mancini is not the right man," he added.

"He's brought the title there after all these years.

"Everything is in a rush so it will be interesting to see what line the Manchester City hierarchy take on this. I think it would be harsh to sack him."
