He would have been proud: Sale boy takes on 10K run to say ‘thank you’ to cancer charity who nursed late dad

A 17-year-old boy is hoping to raise £1,500 in memory of his dad and say ‘thank you’ to those who cared for him – by running a 10k for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Philip Digweed will attempt to complete the distance for a second year in a row tomorrow in recognition of his dad, Phil, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this year.

Last year Philip ran 10k and raised £1079.90, smashing the originally intended target of £150.

And the youngster will be hoping to do even better this year to repay the weekly visits from support nurses and financial support his dad reveived when he was battling his illness.

“I run regularly once a week but I’m feeling nervous as I don’t want to let the people who have sponsored me down,” he said.

“I tried to run an extra kilometer or two each week to prepare.

“I’m doing the run so other people can have the same sort of help because it will help make the lives of other people in the same situation easier if they could have the same support as me and my family did.”

Philip will be running the 10K starting and ending on the athletics track next to the Manchester’s City Stadium, which will roughly take him just under 60 minutes to complete.

“I’m looking forward to the run because of the work and effort I’ve put into it,” he added.

“I think my dad would feel proud as he would have wanted to help and say thank you to Macmillan.”
