Calling tartiest tarts and firmest buns: The Great Village Bake Off hits Manchester Pride Fringe Festival

By Daisy Yates

Do you have the tartiest tarts? Or the best rainbow cake? Or what about the firmest buns?

Then The Great Village Bake Off could be for you.

The Great British Bake Off-inspired cooking competition will join the Manchester Pride Fringe festival this weekend.

LGBT baking club, the Village Bakers, will be joined by special celebrity judges, Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlphine and Great British Bake Off 2012 winner John Whaite, originally from Wigan.

Held in The Molly House, the event will raise money for the Manchester Pride Fund.

John Stewart, Manchester Pride Chief Executive, said: “A brilliant event which pulls together all sections of the community, not only does The Great Village Bake off embody the original ethos of Manchester Pride, but also all of the proceeds raised will go directly to help local LGBT causes.”

The contest will involve four categories including Best Rainbow Cake and Tartiest Tart and also the coveted position of Best In Bake Off with the chance to win exciting prizes.

This will be the first of an annual event, with the group hoping to grow and expand each year.

Stephen Haggan, who helped organise the event along with Kevin Sargent and is a member of the Village Bakers, said: “In the next five years I’d like to see Village Bakers still there and that Great Village Bake Off is always recognised at Pride and has a firm standing.”

The group will also take part in the Parade to raise awareness and welcome new members to the Village Bakers where they can cook and eat and learn new skills from one another.

Mr Haggan added: “We are a group of like-minded people getting together to do something we enjoy.”

Paul Duffy, member of the Village Bakers and general manager of The Molly House, said: “The Village Bakers as a social group has, in a very short time, become an extremely large and well-subscribed group with participants enthusiastically presenting their baked creations each month.”

Great Village Bake Off will take place August 18, to find out more or enter visit http://greatvillagebakeoff.eventbrite.co.uk/
