Thank TfGM for that! City centre trams back on track for Manchester Pride

Manchester’s commuters will soon have to find something new to moan about, as Transport for Greater Manchester have announced that normal Metorlink services will resume at the end of the month.

Numerous lines have been disrupted since the beginning of the multi-million pound redevelopment of St. Peter’s Square tram stop on June 28.

Trams will not stop at St Peter’s Square until summer 2016, but the rapid construction of a single line around the station will allow for trams to once more pass through as of August 28.

And although many people have questioned why the square needed a new tram stop – particularly one which will cost so much to create – Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, was effusive in his words about the project.

He said: “You can really see the shape of things to come in St Peter’s Square, with a much bigger, better tram stop on the way.

“The demolition of the old stop will make way for more public space for everyone to enjoy as part of the council’s exciting flagship redevelopment of the square.”

The service has been resumed in time for the bank holiday weekend, and also for Manchester Pride, which is expected to draw huge crowds of tourists and residents to the city centre.

And TfGM Metrolink director Peter Cushing said he was happy to support the festival, while also thanking commuters for their patience during this time of frustrating delays.

He said: “I’d like to thank our customers for their patience over the summer while we’ve worked to build this single line of track through the square.

“We’re pleased to be on track to get the work finished in time for the bank holiday and Manchester Pride celebrations, of which we’re a proud supporter.”

From Friday August 28 Metrolink will run along the following routes:

Altrincham to Etihad Campus

  • Altrincham to Deansgate-Castlefield
  • Bury to Piccadilly
  • Bury to East Didsbury
  • Eccles-MediaCityUK to Piccadilly
  • Rochdale to Ashton-under-Lyne
  • Manchester Airport to Cornbrook
